Well being and healthImpact on the environment

These days, the notion of «sustainable development» has to be integrated into each phase of the life cycle of a product. As well as measures aimed at minimising the fatigue of masons and ensuring their health, several important points have been borne in consideration during the BESTO® block production procedure.
The BESTO® procedure is basically a concept, providing a certain amount of freedom as to the composition of the raw material used to build modular items. The «durability» of this raw material may be defined on a case-by-case basis.

Energy conservation
The energy needed to produce a functional wall unit of one square meter made of BESTO® blocks equals the sum of the total energy needed to produce its different materials, to that of the manufacture of the blocks themselves, and to that expended to mix the cement. This amount is kept low when expanded clay marbles are used as granulate because these comprise the majority of the volume of the blocks and are relatively non-energy hungry (approx. 1.5 GJ/m3). Furthermore, the quantity of cement to be mixed is very low. The energy used to transport its raw materials to the blending area and of the blocks to the building site must also be accounted for, but local production of BESTO® blocks and the balanced distribution of production sites allows a considerable reduction in this outlay.

Recyclage
The use of BESTO® blocks allows the re-use of almost all cuts and building waste is almost non-existent. This inert waste can be entirely recycled by grinding. They can then be either reintroduced into the manufacturing process of further blocks or used for filling work.

Rational Use of Energy
As shown by the work of the Architecture and climate research centre, the energy impact of the choice of materials is rarely significant when compared to overall consumption (construction, heating, ventilation...) in a classical construction. The use of BESTO® blocks is perfectly compatible with the principles of bioclimactic architecture. Their flexibility in use allows buildings to be designed in optimal harmony with their environment, thus according climate, and the dynamic that this implies, its rightful place in the fundamental dimensions of any architectural creation.
